The Wooden Sash Window Comes Home To Stay
People of a certain age will remember when the
wooden sash window
was the most common architectural feature in British homes. Its beautiful wide outlook, its cheery drop front- always raised in summer and closed in winter. Things have changed a lot since then, of course – the wooden sash at a time fell out of fashion. Marvin Architectural, a window and door firm from County Wicklow in Ireland, has spent the last few years rejuvenating the wooden sash window: and has recently unleashed its creation on an unsuspecting market.

Gone are the thick rope pulleys, which used to rot in the winter and dry shut in the summer. Gone are the single panes of glass, which used to freeze in winter. Gone are the unwieldy half moon catches, which used to nip your fingers before dropping the whole sash on the back of your wrists. The new

comes with low emissivity double glazing as standard (opt for gas filled if you want to really knock a hole in your energy bills); with ultra modern materials making up every moving part; and with more sensible designs for the catches and levers that work the sash.
The visual appeal of the wooden sash is as strong as ever – stronger, in some senses, given that it looks like such a breath of fresh air compared to all that white plastic we have been used to for the last 20 years.
